Monument to Josef Ressel in Bílovice nad Svitavou
Dating: 1929
Annotation:
The monument to the inventor of the propeller Josef Ressel (1793-1857) stands in the Lesnický Slavín area near Bílovice nad Svitavou in the forest on the nature trail dedicated to important foresters and experts who devoted their lives to the study and care of forests.
Description:
The monument to Josef Ressel is not here in Lesnický Slavín by chance. Josef Ressel certainly does belong among the dozens of important foresters who have monuments and stops commemorating them here. In addition to being an inventor and mathematician, who became famous all over the world as the author of the construction of the first ship propeller, Josef Ressel was mainly involved in forestry and was a highly respected expert in today`s Slovenia and Italy. So when Josef Konšel, a prominent forester and professor at the school of agriculture in Brno, came up with the idea of building Lesnický Slavín to commemorate prominent foresters, the Josef Ressel Monument was one of the first to be erected in 1929. Near the Stanislav Lolek well, within sight of Ressel`s cabin, there is a concrete column with Ressel`s likeness and an inscription on a marble tablet.
