Commemorative Plaque to August Seydler

On Masaryk Square in Žamberk there is a plaque commemorating the famous astronomer and physicist August Seydler, who was born here in 1849.

In 1971, a memorial plaque to August Seydler designed by František Šašek was unveiled on Masaryk Square in Žamberk. The plaque bears Seydler`s portrait. Seydler was a prominent professor of astronomy at Prague University, a pupil of Ernst Mach, and he also worked as an astronomer at the observatory in Clementinum. Seydler studied the three-body problem and the orbits of asteroids and comets. He established an observatory in Prague at Letná and founded the first university astronomical institute in the Czech lands. He worked as a professor of astronomy from 1885 and contributed to a number of scientific journals. He was also a friend of T. G. Masaryk.
