Plaque commemorating Heinrich Lumpe at the Zoo in Ústí nad Labem

Dating: 1859─1936, unveiling of the memorial plaque 2008

Annotation:

The death mask of the Ústí wholesaler and pioneer of ecology Heinrich Lumpe (1859–1936) forms the basic motif of his commemorative plaque unveiled in 2008 to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the establishment of the first Central European birdlife reservation in Ústí nad Labem, which at the time was known as the “Lumpepark”.

Description:

The commemorative plaque is situated on the building housing the directorate of the Ústí nad Labem Zoo. It is the work of the Ústí artist Karel Hájek. The main part of the plaque comprises a plaster cast of Lumpe’s death mask from 1936, which is stored in the Ústí nad Labem Municipal Museum. Hájek symbolically placed the mask in the silhouette of a bird’s egg, to emphasize Lumpe’s importance as the founder of birdlife protection.
The commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the establishment of the first birdlife reservation was organized by Ústí nad Labem Zoo, which was set up after the Second World War on the site of the popular “Lumpepark”, and which proudly promotes Lumpe’s legacy. The celebrations in 2008 also included the creation of a nature trail through what is now the Zoo.
