Annotation:
The park on the square in Bělá pod Bezdězem contains a memorial to Ferdinand J. Fiscali (1827-1907), the long-standing director of the local Bohemian Forestry School (Böhmische Forstschule in Weisswasser).
Description:
Ferdinand Fiscali was a leading figure in forestry during the 19th century. At the beginning of his career he was the head forester at the large Colloredo-Mannsfeld estate in Dobříš, after which he took up the post of director of the forestry school in Bělá pod Bezdězem, a position he held from 1866 to 1894. The school earned international acclaim under Fiscali. While he was head of the school Fiscali also worked as the head administrator of the Wallenstein forests, earned the titles of forester and head of the forestry council, was a member of various associations, and was awarded many orders and decorations. He was made a knight in 1883 in recognition of his work.
The memorial in Bělá consists of a granite plinth in the shape of a truncated pyramid, inscribed with information about Fiscali’s life. It is topped by a bronze bust. The construction of the memorial was funded by the Bohemian Forestry Union (Böhmischer Forstverein) and was unveiled in 1926, before the upcoming one hundredth anniversary of Fiscali’s birth.
