Dating: 1907

Annotation:

The memorial in the chateau park in Jilemnice was erected in 1907 and commemorates František Pošepný, one of the 19th century’s most prominent geologists, who was born there.

Description:

František Pošepný was born in the chateau park grounds in Jilemnice at the site of the former estate cooperage, in which his father Josef – a cooper and winemaker – lived and worked. His birthplace used to stand there, but was later demolished and a linden was planted in its place, accompanied by a memorial with a sculpture by the architect Bohumil Kafka. This monument has stood in Jilemnice since 1907 to honour the town’s famous son, who was one of the greatest geologists in the country’s history. He specialised in the geology of deposits and is acknowledged around the world as the founder of economic geology, which made ore mining more efficient
