The commemorative plaque on house no. 15 in Husova ulice marks the birthplace of the mathematician Josef Ladislav Jandera, who was born there in 1776.
Description:
Josef Ladislav Jandera was a prominent figure, born in Hořice. He held a professorship at Charles University, and was a mathematician, theologian and a member of the Premonstratensian Order. In addition to his academic career, he was always a great patriot of Hořice and supported the town financially and through other activities. He was behind the campaign to save Gothard hill and there are several monuments to him around the town. This commemorative plaque was installed by Hořice students in 1877 to mark the 100th anniversary of Jandera’s birth and the ceremony was also attended by one of his most renowned pupils, the philosopher, psychologist and aesthete Dr. Josef Durdík. Other places in Hořice commemorating Jandera include the plaque on the church wall on Gothard hill, which honours one of the first geographical surveys in this country, carried out by Jandera and other scholars, and also the bust of Jandera in Janderovy sady park.
