The plaque on the wall near St. Gothard’s Church commemorates the mathematician Josef Ladislav Jandera and the first geographical survey he made there together with three other scholars in 1818.

Josef Ladislav Jandera was a prominent figure, born in Hořice. He held a professorship at Charles University, and was a mathematician, theologian and a member of the Premonstratensian Order. In addition to his academic career, he was always a great patriot of Hořice and supported the town financially and through other activities. He was behind the campaign to save Gothard hill, had the Chapel of the Virgin Mary built there and, in 1818, together with his university colleagues, the astronomers and mathematicians Alois M. David and Josef Morstadt and accompanied by the local priest Jan Černý, conducted one of the first geographical surveys in this country, when he determined the geographical coordinates of St. Gothard’s Church tower. In 2009 the commemorative plaque was installed there in his honour and to mark this event; the ceremony was attended by Cardinal Dominik Duka.
