The plaque commemorating František Klapálek is located on Šantově náměstí in Litomyšl on the building in which this acclaimed natural scientist and insect specialist lived during the second half of the 19th and the early 20th century.

František Klapálek was one of the most prominent Czech entomologists. He was a leading European expert in the study of beetles, and also specialised in net-winged insects and caddisflies. He published professional and popular work on insects and was the first person to translate Charles Darwin’s work into Czech. He initially worked as a secondary school teacher, but later came to be highly renowned amongst academics. He was a member of many professional societies and was a co-founder of the Czechoslovak Entomological Society, of which he was also the chairman.
