Field Station at Jizerka belonging to the North Bohemian Museum

1961 - till today
The field station at Jizerka belonging to the North Bohemian Museum was originally a gamekeeper`s lodge where the family of gamekeeper Kluge lived. After 1945 and the expulsion of the local inhabitants, the lodge fell to the State Forests Enterprise, as did most of the other houses in the settlement of Jizerka. In 1961 a gratuitous transfer of the building to the North Bohemian Museum was negotiated. Since then it has been functioning as a field research station. At present it serves mainly as a base for entomological and ornithological research.

The field station at Jizerka belonging to the North Bohemian Museum was originally a gamekeeper`s lodge where the family of gamekeeper Kluge lived. The nearest peat meadow in the close by National Nature Reserve Jizerky Peatland is therefore called Kluge`s Meadow. It has been its common, albeit unofficial name for decades. After 1945 and the expulsion of the local inhabitants, the lodge fell to the State Forests Enterprise, as did most of the other houses in the settlement of Jizerka. But the foresters did not have much use for most of the buildings and they served as warehouses, barns or for housing foreign workers. This use was reflected in the condition of the buildings, which were falling into disrepair. In 1961 Dr Miloslav Nevrlý, a zoologist at the natural sciences section of the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec, organized a gratuitous transfer of the former Kluge lodge to the Museum. Since then the house has been serving as a field station in one of the biologically most attractive areas of the Jizerské Mountains. In the past it was used mostly as a base for chiropterological (Chiropterology is the study of bats) and botanical research. At present it serves mainly as a base for entomological and ornithological research and, to a lesser degree, for monitoring large predator animals, for geological research and such. Since 2004, annual autumn bird trapping and bird ringing have taken place here, making Jizerka one of the important sites for bird ringing in the Czech Republic. From the point of entomology, the Jizerské Mountains are also one of the best documented areas of the Czech Republic, due to the intensive research of dozens of experts on various groups of insects. Dozens of articles have already been published based on research in this part of the Jizerské Mountains.
