- 1861
This is the birthplace of Josef Ressel, a prominent Chrudim native, mathematician, forest engineer and above all the inventor of the ship propeller, who was born here in 1793.
In Široká street, just a few steps from Ressel square in Chrudim, stands the original apartment house where the famous inventor Josef Ressel was born in 1793. He was born into the family of toll collector Anton Hermann Ressel and spent the first 13 years of his life in this house. The commemorative plaque was placed on the house four years after Ressel`s death, in 1861, at a time when the world finally appreciated his invention of the ship propeller. The plaque was made by the Prague sculptor Karel Svoboda and mounted on the house in the presence of Ressel`s son Jindřich.
