Commemorative Plaque to Josef Hanuš in Jilemnice

1981
The commemorative plaque of the eminent Czech chemist Josef Hanuš (1872─1955) is placed in the place of his birthplace in Jilemnice. On the site of today`s school there stood the house where the author of Czech chemical nomenclature and a leading figure of Czech analytical chemistry was born.

Josef Hanuš (1872-1955) is one of the most important Czech chemists. His main area of interest was analytical chemistry, but he also studied fats and resins. He worked at the University of Chemical Technology and the Czech Technical University, where he also held the position of rector and as a very able organizational person was responsible for the establishment of the departments of analytical chemistry at these schools. Given his experience, his foreign work and his great expertise, he was an important figure in the creation of Czech chemical nomenclature, which is still used today. The Hanuš Medal for talented chemists is still awarded in his honour. Jilemnice commemorated its native chemistry celebrity by installing a marble memorial plaque with a bronze bust in 1981 in the place where he was born - in Komenský Street No. 103. The plaque with the bust was created by sculptors Antonín Kulda and Ladislav Kozák.
