The Boleslav Tecl Observatory

20th century
The public observatory on the Hammerák hill near Moravská Třebová is now used by the public for regular night stargazing and for those interested in astronomy from the local Children and Youth Club. The observatory was built by the local community in the 1970s.

The observatory on the south-eastern outskirts of Moravská Třebová was founded by Boleslav Tecl, a local teacher who organized astronomy clubs for children and youth in Moravská Třebová. His clubs were very popular among children and in 1971 he managed to push for the construction of a small observatory as part of the local Children and Youth Club. The hill called Hammerák was chosen as the site and the was built by people interested in astronomy, by members of the club and other volunteers in their free time. The building was completed in 1976 and was open to the public from then until the end of the 1980s. After the revolution in 1989 however, activity at the observatory ceased and the building gradually fell into disrepair. It was not until 2010 that the restoration and new activities of amateur astronomers began, who are gradually reconstructing the building and equipping it with observing equipment. Today the observatory is open to the public by appointment only or for evening observing regularly on Wednesday evenings.
