Bust of Josef Theurer

2001
The bust of Josef Theurer (1862–1928) is situated in front of the buildings of the Secondary Industrial School and Higher Vocational School in Příbram, which used to house the University of Mining, where Theurer spent most of his active scientific life.

Josef Theurer was a man of many scientific interests. However, besides geology, mathematics, and also music theory and history, he most made his name in the history of science with his contributions to the development of experimental physics while teaching geologists and future miners. The town of Příbram decided to place a bust in his honour at the site where he worked, on what is now Theurerovo náměstí. The first model of the bust was created in 1947, but was never put in place. After 1948 náměstí J. Theurera square was renamed as Fučíkovo náměstí and Theurer had to wait for his bust until after the revolution in 1989. The original model of the bust made by the academic sculptor Václav Šára was used to cast a bronze bust, which was placed on a stone monolith in front of the buildings of the former University of Mining on 13 October 2001 to mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the school.
