Franz Josst memorial

22. 4. 1815 – 24. 12. 1862
This stone obelisk stands at the site of the tragic death of Franz Josst, a prominent gardener at Děčín Chateau.

On the edge of the Děčín neighbourhood of Letná, on a rock above the former quarry, stands a stone obelisk commemorating the tragic death of Franz Josst, the head gardener at the chateau in Děčín. While on a hunting expedition on Christmas Eve in 1862 Josst was apparently shot and killed here by a stray bullet. The memorial was erected by Josst’s friends soon after his death. Towards the end of the 20th century the obelisk fell and lay under the rock, until it was repaired in 1991 and reinstalled in its original place. The name Franz Josst is carved on the obelisk, with the date 24. 12. 1862 below it. The memorial can be reached from Albánská street (approx. 100 m along the footpath leading to the edge of the cliff).
