Memorial on the site of the birthplace of Franz X. M. Zippe

1791–1863 (monument unveiled 1995)
One of the founders of geology and mineralogy in Bohemia, Franz Xaver Maximilian Zippe, was born in Dolní Falknov (now part of Kytlice in the Děčín region) in house no. 14 on 15th January 1791. The house was demolished in 1963, and today the site is marked by a memorial to this important local figure.

F. X. M. Zippe’s father was a butcher and trader and ran the U Beránka (Zum Lamm, or The Ram) tavern in the building. The house, dating from 1668, belonged to the Zippe family until 1945. After the German population moved away after the war the house began to fall into disrepair and was demolished in 1963 (a hundred years after Zippe’s death). Even back then there was a commemorative plaque on the building in honour of the prominent local scientist. All that has remained of the original farm buildings is the stables, which now house the local car club.
It wasn’t until 1995 that a memorial was built on the site of Zippe’s birthplace, at the initiative of Emil Sedláček, then the village mayor, and the artist Jiří Wagner. The memorial consists of a three-and-a-half-ton block of syenite from the Rožany quarry, featuring a commemorative plaque.
From the memorial you can ascend to the nearby viewing point with a memorial commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, from where there is a beautiful view of the whole of the Kytlice valley.
